Beauty in Sports

I found an article called “The Math Behind Beauty” in Discover Magazine and it described how we all depend on beauty, but not everyone knows what it is. The main idea is that we all see beauty mainly in how we look and there is a “golden ratio” in how looks can make us beautiful. Dr. Stephen Marquardt , an American surgeon, came up with this golden ratio and used it in plastic surgery to meet peoples standards on what they think is beautiful. This post made me think about how there is actual math between what we perceive is beautiful in people, but I also think it can be used in sports. There are different spots in a game that can be considered beautiful, but there are also ways we can do math to make sports so much prettier. In football we use angles to tackle a runner and when we make the perfect angle and get a big hit, it is one of the most beautiful things in the game. The QB has to use angles in order for him to throw good balls to his receivers and when it is perfect, it is considered beautiful. There are just so many ways math can truly bring out the beauty in something.

I picked two podcast that I will reference to to back up my position on beauty. Sara‘s podcast is very similar to my subject and it was about how her dad thought hockey was beautiful. As a fan, you can see a player, coach or a team do a certain thing and it can considered very beautiful. Mr. Dupont saw the beauty in the National Hockey League because his favorite team won the championships. It really struck him and showed how a sport can effect someone because it is beautiful. I am also going to use Colin‘s podcast and show how beauty can effect someone and show them how there future will be. Colin’s friend was stuck on the fence about what his major should be in college, but when he went to the biggest aquarium in the world and saw a whale shark and he knew he wanted to be a marine biologist. That small moment shaped his future. With sports, It shaped my career because I knew I wanted to be in a field that will contribute to sports. Physical therapy are able to athletes bounce back form any injury and even strengthen them. I feel like if I didn’t have sports in my life, I would’ve never found this path of how I want my future to be. The beauty of sports is the most beautiful experience I have ever seen.

I really like how you connected math with sports and then connected that math back to beauty. I also think it is really important how you talked about how this influences your future. I think that you chose good podcasts and another one that I think might be helpful to your argument is Laims podcast. I think this would help because you could argue how this was the result of mathematical beauty and it inspired her further and helped reassure that she chose the right career.

This is actually very funny because I chose to use the same article for my paper! I loved how it went into the math behind beauty as well. I think it so cool that you incorporated sports relating to beauty to use in your paper. It’s very interesting how you wrote of how a quarterback needs to throw the ball at a specific angle. You chose some great podcasts, but I think another one you could use would be Deidra’s about her friend and his car. It shows that perseverance will pay off which is a big theme in sports!
